Buy hereSteely Dan bassist Walter Becker, whose solo CD “Circus Money” is out now, was asked by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution what his top five albums were of all time — in terms of production value, which was so important to Steely Dan.
“In jazz music, what (legendary engineer) Rudy Van Gelder did at Blue Note just really stands out,” Becker began. “The tones. The great balance of the instruments and just the sound he recorded — the emphasis on fundamentals and harmonies. So we’ve got to start with something like Herbie Hancock’s ‘Inventions & Dimensions.’ ”
He also likes Horace Silver’s “Song for My Father,” Cannonball Adderly’s “Somethin’ Else,” the Replacements’ “Hootenanny” and finally, everything by Bob Dylan up until “John Wesley Harding.”
“It was all just chaotic,” he said. “And someone was really smart just to let that happen; not to do something about it. You know, like I heard he would only cut it two or three times and be done with it. Not like Elton John — who makes great-sounding records — but would lay down like 1,000 vocals.”

We are pleased to announce the Worldwide (ex-US/Canada) release of Circus Money, Walter Becker’s first solo album in fourteen years. “It is,” the artist acknowledges, “a unique career strategy.”
Over the past 38 years, Becker and his long-time collaborator Donald Fagen have released 10 albums under the Steely Dan moniker. Circus Money is Becker’s second solo effort. To suggest that the new album, produced by Grammy® Award winning Larry Klein, has long been highly anticipated is something of an understatement among the Becker cognoscenti.
It was in 1994 that 11 Tracks of Whack, Becker’s debut solo outing arrived, with conclusive proof that the songwriter, multi-tasking musician and studio habitué had more to say - and more ways to say it - than could be contained in the epochal oeuvre of Steely Dan.
